FISH HOEK and SIMON'S TOWN, Cape Peninsula, SOUTH AFRICA, September 25, 2005 — We walked to the nearby store for some provisions and newspapers.

Lunch at a restaurant near the beach owned by Mags' ex.

Then a trip to nearby Simon's Town where we visited the statue of Just Nuisance (a celebrated dog from the WWII era) and walked down to see the penguins. The African or Jackass penguins are now protected a bit more from the tourists than the last time I visited but it's a fine day

and the little guys and their beautiful beach are as neat as ever.

We have a quiet evening. It's interesting to see the slant on the world from here by reading the papers. Everything in Africa is more important. North America's hurricanes are more distant. The horrors in Zimbabwe are quite important because South Africa shares a border with them. Even events in Northern African are better reported here. Not that Bush, Iraq and hurricanes don't make the news. They are just reported in the cursory way we get news of Africa.

I'm really into my vacation now. My voice is coming back and I feel great. Revisiting the penguins was fun and that area is as beautiful as I remembered.
