detail, fish in pond from the garden tour

"Forgive me if I suggest that this isn't the most felicitous way to do battle against oblivion. Writing a book is likely, through the quickness and completeness with which one's book will die, to make the notion of oblivion all the more vivid."
Joseph Epstein, Editiorial in The New York Times today

It is not enough to be happy; it is necessary, in addition, that others not be.

does it matter what day it is?

Well, yes. Different activities happen on Saturday, a bow to those who work other days. The club isn't as crowded in the morning as our mostly family-oriented members do whatever with the family. I watch three channels of TV (at one instant baseball, hunting and a Soloflex paid program). I don't watch four channels because one TV is being repaired. I read the NY Times also while on the bicycle. Appropriately there is an op-ed piece by Joseph Epstein, an essayist that I like, about why not to write a book. A lot of it makes sense. What does this mean for all the possible books I thought I might write?

  • Traveling Light, A Guide to Life and Luggage
  • Childing, The Adult Child Cares for His Parent
  • A Series of Nesting Novels, as yet untitled

Well, I've hardly begun them so giving up is easy now and I have an excuse. Mr Epstein has written 15 books. I've read one of them. He doesn't take his own advice.

So, yeah, I exercised. Came home from that and showered and convinced FFP to go to the garden conservancy tour. We hit five of the six houses and also stopped at Cipollina for a sandwich and a pizza which we split. (For future reference either one would have fed us both, especially the small pizza.)

Forrest wanted to watch the football game so I went and got my dad and took him to the sixth which was James David's. I had joined the Garden Conservancy so we got to go into James' house, too. Dad got around all the steps pretty well but enjoyed sitting in the A.C. in the house a moment. I told him it was a test to see if he was up to certain rigors of travel.

Opera evening. The season begins soon and there was a cocktail party for The President's Council. This group of donors makes it possible to hire the star singers who are recruited for the productions. I thought there would be entertainment, some singing. But just talking. So. I had some food and some wine and we came home. I'm weary anyway. Lots of being outside, exercising, the last few days. I'm up to it, of course. But not necessarily used to it. And, frankly, I still feel that I'm making up for sleep lost over the summer. It's odd but I feel that.

JUST TYPING
Saturday is Saturday.
Even if you are retired.
Things are different.
More crowded.
Or less.
