wine tasting

Sleepless in the early a.m. of this day. No reason I can find. Legs twitch, thirsty, couldn't get drowsy enough. I idly flip through some of the piles of old newspaper. Those of you who know me know that there are always piles of newspaper. Maybe it's the nachos I ate? Maybe it's the alchohol I did not drink. Oh, well. Even with only a little sleep I feel OK.

Today's mystery picture is a tribute to the one true ubiquitous thing. No, I didn't go there. But occasionally a McD far afield is an adventure, too. One in Tours (France) has tiled pictures of the chateau, beer (of course) and poodles sitting on chairs inside. One in Geneva provided a spot to sit on a patio with a beer. In Moscow, they provide American bathrooms to the roamer. (And one of them has miniature landmarks from around the world: Eiffel Tower, Kremlin Wall, Big Ben.)

I got a thank you note from my adopted 'grandkids' for some gifts I sent to them when their parents were by the other day. I like it when I get an actual note from someone. E-mail is great but snail mail is so real. My friend Anne and I were discussing a (homemade) thank you note I sent her. She liked it, she said. Neither of us could remember why I sent it, what the gift or kindness actually was! Funny.

Tonight was a wine tasting. Hadn't been to a (formal) one in a while. Mirabelle is run by people who appreciate wine and appreciate selling it for a fair price. But they don't appreciate reservations. The wine tasting was of Syrahs (and Shiraz, the same thing) and inexplicably a Petite Syrah and a couple of whites. They recommended drinking 1.5 ounces of fifteen wines. Forrest and I skipped two and shared 1.5 ounces of 13. Therefore we had a reasonable amount of wine considering we poured some out in the spit bucket.

They had some nice appetizers (especially nice little tuna bits). The winner in the value category in my book was a R.H. Phillips EXP Syrah, Dunnigan Hills 1997. Winner overall in my view was the Swanson Syrah from Napa Valley, 1997. Reputed to be very expensive though. Some of the Aussie ones were good, too. I always like Rosemount.

Saw a few people we knew. Yeah, we always do. Forrest introduced himself to a beautiful woman who was a civil engineer.

Went to Fonda after the wine tasting and had a little more sustantial food. Saw some people we know. Yeah, we always do. Since about the last table available was next to the restrooms lots of people trooped by. Talked to Tom for a while. Had a nice glass of Merlot.

Came home pretty tired. Forgot to sleep last night. Still I did OK at work and got plenty done.
