March 14
Went to vote today. I wonder how many people in this town actually
go to vote in their grade school--the one they attended as youngsters.
Gotta admit, it always brings back a flood of memories when I go to
Rosedale. That place was the center of my universe outside of my parents'
house for six years of my life. I learned to play my first musical instrument
on the stage in the lunchroom. I checked out my first book in the library.
And I still remember when they tried to skip me from first to second
grade and I refused to go. How different my life would have been if
I hadn't held on to my desk that day and, I'm sure, irritated the heck
out of the teacher who was trying to move me up the ladder. (She probably
just wanted me out of her hair. Poor woman.) This morning, I actually
took a second to walk down the hall in the "old" part that
was built in 1949 or so. The "new" part was built a few years
later, I think in 1951, the year before I started. I stopped in front
of every room in that hall and thought for a minute about something
I could connect to that had happened there. Kind of fun to do that.
I went to fifth and sixth grade in the "old" part and first
through fourth in the "new" part.

Talked to our building renter today. What a terrific guy--boy, I lucked
out when he decided to rent that place. But then, I was due for a break
on that thing. Thankfully, he's signing up for another three years.
Of course, that means I have to shuck out more commission to the realtors.
But they found him and I can't complain about that.
