"I wish I was in Austin" That's what my dad said when we picked him up today.
Dad was eager to get home which, to him, is now Austin, a place we call 'Penny Creek Ranch.' But he wasn't looking forward to the ride. Which is strange. This is the same man who will jump in his van with me and drive straight through to Raton, N.M. with barely a bathroom break, counting roadkill. He declares the Dallas to Austin journey boring. Well, he's not wrong there. It is boring. Unless you are in the market for a double-wide, an RV or large sculptures carved with a chainsaw. The stop in West, Texas (as opposed to West Texas, a whole different thing) at the Czech bakery for gas, bathroom and snacks relieves what is possibly the most boring two hundred miles in the world. Somehow the desolation of IH10 is more interesting. |

We got up, had coffee and I packed
while FFP went out for a muffin and newspaper. We had a little time when
we left the hotel so we drove around my old neighborhood, by my apartment
on Hudnall Street. We went to my aunt's apartment in Mesquite. Dad was ready to go. My aunt made me some more coffee. We were off, me driving. Boring leg one; gas, restroom, snacks; boring leg two. I drove all the way. Took Dad home and we went to our house. SuRu had dropped off the dog and she called and came over. We decided to have fried chicken and watch Whale Rider on DVD. We also watched Sex in the City and The L Word. I'd intended to go workout but what with going through the mail and newpapers and watching video it just didn't happen.
