landscaping the suburban desert As I walk around the suburbia my sister lives amidst, I admire people who can conform to this degree. People who can get excited about landscape lights or a personalized mailbox. It can be boring here. The houses and the landscaping don't hold nearly as many potential surprises as the neighborhoods I walk in Austin. I'm not tempted to take pictures although I take my camera. The landscaping here runs to boulders and half whiskey barrels, roses and sun flowers, rocks and pebbles of various sizes and textures. There is a big, interesting iron schulpture in one yard and an old M*A*S*H vehicle that has been parked in a driveway for years. People personalize their mailboxes, decorating them as animals or airplanes. Mostly it is dull. There are good walking trails and sidewalks, though, and there are places to get a snack or coffee and go to the bathroom at the 1.5 to 2 miles out range.

It was a lazy day. I walked for over an hour. (No stop for coffee or snack.) Probably four miles or so. We had an outing to The Tattered Cover book store although we didn't get to stay there long. Spent time reading or thinking. I could have been bored but I really wasn't. It's nice to have time to read and think when things aren't falling in on you.

In The New Yorker Profiles. Started there is a profile that is forty-one 'false' starts at writing a profile of an artist. I really like that.

I scribbled in my notebook. I was reading and I wrote down the word solipsistic. Really journal writing is the ultimate act of the solipsist. Especially the journals (like mine) that don't take on world issues in any meaningful way. |
