independent I get up and pick up the newspapers and straighten a bit since we are having company. I fool around with the WEB and stuff, sitting there in my tennis clothes but unsure whether I should go to the club. When I get there, I'm glad I did go. They need one more person to make up the doubles teams for the fun mixer. I play three sets, either winning or losing soundly depending on my partner. (Yeah, I know.) I have fun but I get hot. I'm always struck with how nice everyone is at this club when I play tennis here. Must do it more often. Home again, I'm not really in the mood for the party since I'm hot and dehydrated and feel like a shower and a nap. When I get out of the shower, FFP is at the grocery store and I'm in my bathrobe when the parents arrive. Dad picks some tomatoes from the neighbor's garden where he sharecrops. We sit a minute and talk. Mom tries to explain what is wrong with her computer. First this window, then that disappears. I'll have to see it, of course. Gayle arrives with containers of all kinds of ingredients. She starts bustliing around the kitchen. I don't help much. Different people arrive. I try to get drinks. I'm not really prepared. FFP and Gayle cut apples for apple pie. Gayle fries up different kinds of burgers (cowboy, Central Market, bleu cheese and grilled onion). She has made a great potato salad and brocolli and cauliflower slaw. Different people drift in as the day goes by. We clean and put away. Pull out, cook, clean. It's fun really. But I got too hot in the morning and a little headache develops. I'm too stupid to just take an Advil although I don't drink any alchohol and drink lots of water. When everyone is gone and things are sort of cleaned up, FFP and I sit down and watch an old Frank Sinatra flick called Suddenly. I work the crossword in the Times. (And it's Wednesday! The theme is patriotic sports team with the last one ironic according to the clue: Detroit Red Wings, Chicago White Sox, Toronto Blue Jays.) Late, I decide that I should take an Advil or two. Should have done it earlier.
