"War is little more than a catalogue of mistakes and misfortunes." Churchill quoted in 20,000 Quips and Quotes edited by Evan Esar
D-Day 1999

D-Day I worked all day like it was an emergency and maybe it was. But it isn't an invasion with young men being thrown into the mouth of a beast. We are really very lucky. At lunch I visited with a Nancy at Mirabelle. That was a nice break. After work I was exhausted. FFP made a salad. I had a couple of beers. We hit the TV jackpot and caught the new Six Feet Under and a couple of new Sex in the City episodes and then they were running Hannah and Her Sisters which I can watch and watch. But TV is such a black hole. And it's D-Day. Two years ago I was there at the scene snapping pix of signs warning the vets and there relatives off the grass around the monuments (which everyone ignored) and watching reenactments and German and French people in old U.S. uniforms. But we didn't storm the beach with a 100-pound pack, wading through the surf under fire. Nope. Long flight in a cushy commercial jet. (Well, by WWII standards.) Met buddies at appointed spot. Drove up in a rent car and made an assault on Bayeux to get moules frites. |
