"Buying books would be a good thing if one could also buy the time to read them in: but as a rule the purchase of books is mistaken for the appropriation of their contents."

Arthur Schopenhauer, philosopher (1788-1860)

it's a taxing life

We got our taxes back from the CPA. Have the forms become more and more incomprehensible over the years? It certainly seems so. I took a class years ago and we actually had to do a return. I managed then but I'd still be working on it if I'd done my own. (Although the programs can certainly shield one from the obtuse language of the forms I suppose. I haven't used one of those in years either.)

A friend of mine says that the tax is 'rent for living in the U.S.' It's pretty steep all the same. Especially since I also have to pay 'rent' to the city, county and school district on my house, eight cents of every dollar spent foolishly on non-food items, etc. Still, it's a pretty good deal, all in all. I get to keep some and certainly more than in more socialist countries. At least the U.S. rent goes down with income while the 'rent' on the house will not. This is the argument many people put forward for a state income tax. But...they never seem to give up one tax for another so I'm against it.

In order to get my presentation for the May conference as clean as possible, I present it to some colleagues. The room is too small and doesn't have a screen because I scheduled it at the last minute. (We have plenty of conference rooms. I can only conclude that we have too many meetings.) Still, it goes well even though I waste an hour before getting a laptop loaner to work. (Have I mentioned that I hate computers?) My colleagues are kind and don't criticize too much and then we discuss the material in the context of our work. ("As long as we are asking questions you will never get asked.")

After work, SuRu, FFP and I go to Fonda. My throat hurts. Two margaritas soothe it. At home I take some Dimetapp and Echinecea. Then I sleep. In chair, in bed. I refuse illness but it doesn't always work.
